Square Renovation and the Santa Fe Depot

Our square can be renovated and its history preserved.

The Ritz Theatre is a jewel.

The Manhattan Hotel is a jewel in progress.

Hopefully someone will buy the old CADA building where the new Hard Hat Café and Barb’s Books are located and keep those going.

There is movement on the “burned out spot” with a less ambitious initial restoration plan to be proposed by the chamber.

Some newly relocated architects are willing to donate their time to the project.

Many dream of restoring the courthouse back to its original state.

Ironically, the fact that we even have a literal “square” is unique.

Many small towns have done away with theirs.

If we could restore ours, it would be a tourist attraction and a community gathering place.

It is right on Highway 180, a heavily traveled state road.

Another opportunity has opened up.

It has nothing to do directly with the square but a lot to do with preserving Snyder history.

The historic Santa Fe Depot is scheduled to be demolished in 2008, but would be given to an interested group if they would move it.

To me the ideal place would be with the other historic buildings at the coliseum.

We even have a train engine already in place!

What a tourist attraction that would make.

Not to mention that we are preserving the history of our county.

We have a year to work to save this landmark.

We need an expert in moving old buildings.

Are you one or do you know of someone?

Are you interested in this project?

Or you can comment on this blog entry.

It only takes desire and commitment.

The money will follow.

Let’s act now to preserve history and attract tourists to our community.

I agree we need to preserve our history.
I think it would be so cool to have a neat square.
I know when I travel I love to stop a neat out of the way places.

We need to preserve Snyder's history. But somehow we must bring the courthouse back to it's original glory. A town square is not complete without it's courthouse, and a masoleum is not appropriate.

I am aware from conversations with previous city manager John Gale that Snyder qualifies for [some]grant given to small towns for such historic renovations. it would be wise to contact him and inquire about this grant if you're serious about making downtown snyder a spectacle, he's all about it.

The lady who runs the musieum at the college, could get a grant to refurbish, the courthouse, back to it's orginal state. She tried to do just that a few years ago. The county or city was not intersted in the project. what a shame.THEY really don't want the town or county to grow.

Very true, they are all happy with the size of the County and City. Snyder could really grow if they would let it!! What is Snyder gonna do when the OIL is gone, dry up and blow away?

Please be careful when you say "county" or "city". THEY ARE NOT ONE IN THE SAME. People gripe all the time because the "city" needs to do something here or there, when in reality it is the State of Texas or Scurry County who owns the property or has control. Yes there are many things the city needs to do, but they don't control everything, particularly personal property.

But aside from that, I agree. Each entity needs to look at what they are responsible for. The City has no control over the courthouse! That is a "County" deal, and if enough people pushed for a courthouse restoration, County officials might listen more closely.

They seem to have a lot of money right now that they have not had for years, and for now at least, the source (tax base) is in tact and strong. So now would be the time to pursue such a project. But, we have a school bond issue for the next 23 years, a potential school bond issue pending, a new hospital district, and from what I hear, we will soon be looking to build a new County jail, that will likely require a bond issue.

I'm not sure from the tax payer point of view that the Courthouse is something we ought to be pursuing just because of historical value. We have limits to our personal ability too.

What many may not know is that the area between the old courthouse walls (which are still there) and the current granite walls, is storage for records etc. THOUSANDS of square feet of storage that would need to be replaced if the old courthouse walls were to be restored.

Is the project impossible, certainly not, but a lot structurally has changed, and it is not as simple as taking down the granite shell. It would also require relocating the entire operation for years possibly, computer relocation, court relocation, etc. This would be no small deal. But not impossible.

While that project is certainly personal to some, and central to a historic restoration, it at least is not an eyesore like many other places that make Snyder just plain ugly.

Drive around, and look. We have stores on College that have 3 foot tall weeds growing out of every crevice in the parking lots and along the edge of the street. 5 minutes with a hoe, or $10 worth of roundup would be nice.

We have the burned out place on the square that is probably the worst eyesore we have. Problem is, no one wants to pay big money to fix it, and any outside architect you involve can't look at some simple solution, it has to be a grand showplace when they are finished. Thus, it becomes a deal we can't do. Too much money, too much upkeep, and for some reason common sense just can't solve that deal. We need something low maintenance, basically vandalism resistant, and not something else to dump on the City or County to maintain. It needs to maintain itself. Concrete & Steel. Hold the shrubs, hold the grass, don't think about any glass. If it isn't concrete or bolted down, forget it.

We've had several great ideas over the years, and many people put hours and hours into them. Look at them now. No one to take care of them. The deep creek walking path, the flower beds along the edge of the creek just to name a couple. This project to remove the eyesore on the square does not need to turn into one of these type projects.

Snyder used to be sparkle city. I know, weeds show up after every small rain. For some reason though, we never clean up afterward. When damage occurs to retaining walls on 37th or College due to vehicle accidents, why don't the repairs ever get made. Surely someone's insurance paid for the damage. Why did it not get fixed?

I see vacant businesses that are overgrown by weeds. I see buildings with roofs half blown off. Why don't these get condenmed like others?

If everyone would just take care of their own property, our city would look 75% better. That might inspire other projects like the burned out building to get some action. We are slipping. We look sloppy. Let's do something about it!
