Questions from a Reader

Message:: I have a few questions, and was hoping you'd know the answers. The first one I have asked everyone I know, and NOONE has an answer. 1. If Snyder is home of the White Buffalo, why is our mascot a Tiger? Doesnt Tigers EAT White Buffalos? 2. I read online, that supposably, the coliseum is haunted by a young boy. The young boy was chasing after a bat, fell down the steps, broke his neck, and died. Did this truly happen? If so, what year? 3. Also online, I found on www.lubbockonline.com on 6/04/97 that there was a murder in Texas. It says that a murder happened at a convenient store, but doesnt list the stores name. What convenient store did this happen at? Thank you for your time. My kids and I, have been seeking an answer to the first question for years! Hopefully, someone, somewhere knows the answer.

This is an e-mail sent to SnyderTexas.net.

I am going to give what info I know in this post. If anyone has more info, you can give it in the comments section of this blog or you can send it through the Contact Us section of SnyderTexas.net.

I believe the White Buffalo theme was begun in earnest when the Chamber started the White Buffalo Days in the early 1980’s.

The Tiger had been the mascot of our public school teams for many years before this.

I have never heard of a movement to change the Tiger mascot to that of the White Buffalo.

Possibly a Tiger could kill and eat a White Buffalo. However, I don’t believe they ever existed in the same physical environment so that we could find out.

It is conceivable that a White Buffalo could gore a Tiger and certainly a herd of buffalo could seriously injure a Tiger to the extent that the Tiger would not mess with them.

However, a Tiger is probably the more formidable creature.

It is true that a young boy fell through the coliseum roof to the floor below while his parent or parents were practicing for a play.

He had been able to climb up to that area through an unsecured ladder.

I remember it happening. I think in the 1970’s.

I don’t know if he were chasing a bat or just playing around.

I have never heard that the coliseum is haunted.

Finally, according to official records, Dorsi Johnson was executed on June 4, 1997 for the death of Jack Huddleston, 53, a convenience store clerk in Snyder.

He was shot in the head with a .22 caliber pistol after being told to lie on the floor. The robbery netted $161.92.

I am not sure when the incident happened.

Why would it matter if a tiger wouldeat a white buffalo. One of Snyder's main claims to fame is the killing of a rare and beautiful white buffalo. We even celebrate in October with White Buffalo Days.

This happened in 1986.

From Cornell Law School Website

Extract from texas court of criminal appeals decision...

Petitioner, then 19 years of age, and his companion, Amanda Miles, decided to rob Allsup's convenience store in Snyder, Texas, on March 23, 1986. After agreeing that there should be no witnesses to the crime, the pair went to the store to survey its layout and, in particular, to determine the number of employees working in the store that evening. They found that the only employee present during the pre-dawn hours was a clerk, Jack Huddleston. Petitioner and Miles left the store to make their final plans.

They returned to Allsup's a short time later. Petitioner, a handgun in his pocket, reentered the store with Miles. After waiting for other customers to leave, petitioner asked Huddleston whether the store had any orange juice in one gallon plastic jugs because there were none on the shelves. Saying he would check, Huddleston went to the store's cooler. Petitioner followed Huddleston there, told Huddle-ston the store was being robbed, and ordered him to lie on the floor. After Huddleston complied with the order and placed his hands behind his head, petitioner shot him in the back of the neck, killing him. When petitioner emerged from the cooler, Miles had emptied the cash registers of about $160. They each grabbed a carton of cigarettes and fled.

In April 1986, a few weeks after this crime, petitioner was arrested for a subsequent robbery and attempted murder of a store clerk in Colorado City, Texas. He confessed to the murder of Jack Huddleston and the robbery of Allsup's and was tried and convicted of capital murder. The homicide qualified as a capital offense under Texas law because petitioner intentionally or knowingly caused Huddleston's death.

The boy fell through the ceiling of the coliseum, not the roof.
