What's Going to Happen to the Country Club Golf Course?

It seems that a very large donation will be made to the county to run the country club golf course if the county will accept ownership.

This will enable the course to be funded at a first class level.

And taxpayers will not be burdened with higher taxes.

Our two golf courses are community assets and definitely should not be allowed to deteriorate.

True, not everyone plays golf, but not everyone uses the park or the baseball fields or the coliseum.

But they are all part of the quality of life in Snyder, both for current residents and for attracting others to move here.

Yet, there is opposition.

Comments such as:

I know that if the county gets it, our taxes will eventually get raised.

Those commissioners have no business running a golf course.

I don’t play golf so why do I care if we have a course or not.

Yet, many counties run golf courses.

And they don’t have a donated fund which allows them to be self sufficient.

It seems like an opportunity that should be seized.

Snyder needs the country club golf course and the country club with the pool, since we do not have a public pool at this time. Call you county commissioner and voice your opinion on this matter

On the surface this seems like a wonderful thing for our community and I hope that the facts substantiate this, however, I am not aware of any detailed information being available to the tax paying public concerning this transaction.

When this idea was presented to the commissioners court earlier in the year, very few facts were actually presented and very few questions ask. Informed decisions benefit many, while political decisions normally benefit a selected few. A public forum should be held concerning this matter.

Someone has suggested that opinions should be expressed and questions asked. I am not confident that the county commissioners or the county judge know the appropriate questions to ask or what to do with the information after they get it. Seems that the donors want out of the golf course business and are willing to pay to do it. Their reasons are probably much more valid for getting "out" than the countys would be for getting "in".

Point of discussion might begin with....Why do you people want out of the golf course business if it is such a tremendous asset?

A wise man once said not to overly concern yourself with an ant bite, but to be very aware of the dangers of stampeeding elephants.

Scurry County does not need another WHITE ELEPHANT.

Absolutely, we don't need another white elephant. I totally agree with the statements that this is a community asset. I even hit a round once in a while, and love it. As long as it pays for itself, fine! But, when it doesn't anymore, NOT fine! Apparenly, it is not paying for itself now. The extremely generous donation offer by a very fine man and his highly respected company is attractive. With proper management and oversight, this might all work. The question is, who is that? I don't believe for a minute that it is something the County needs to add to their already long list of things to ponder and finance. Would it be possible for an appointed board to run this, some non-profit organization, keeping it from becoming an issue involving local government, and yet making the dream come true? I know everyone says it won't cost the County anything, but we all know better! There are no free lunches.

Perhaps the City and the County should consider operating the golf course. That way, all of the citizens of Scurry County could be entertained by the sometimes not-so-intelligent bickering over which enity is going to subsidize this valuable community asset.

If you live in the City, you are still the county! If the City participates, then we as city residents pay twice, once on our County tax bill, and again on our City tax bill. If the County only understood that the County does not start at the city limits, the City and County might well be able to communicate for the first time!
