The Hispanic Community
In mid December, speaking at WTC, Dr. Steve Murdock, official state demographer of Texas backed up with a bunch of statistics what most of us already knew instinctively.
The population in Texas is one of the fastest growing in the United States.
Most of the growth is in the Hispanic population.
By 2040 Texas will have a decided Hispanic majority.
By 2040 8 out of every 10 public school students will be non-Anglo.
Snyder is already closer to this statistic than the state average.
Dr. Murdock said the statistics also tell us that in 2040 Texas will be poorer and less educated.
Bottom line for Scurry County: the Anglo community and the Hispanic community must engage in a dialogue to determine the shape of our future.
One place this dialogue might take place is through the Chamber of Commerce.
It could start between business leaders of the two communities.
Businessmen have a lot in common and the two groups could work together to move the county forward in the 21st century.

I think that this is a great thread discussion. As a hispanic citizen of Scurry county myself, I try to be a law abiding upstanding citizen conscience of others and their property. I myself try push upon my children the importance of education, academics and good morals. Unfortunately not all of the other citizens in Snyder share my feelings. I heard in the news the other day of a Scandal that has started in D.F.W. about students being given homework even on their holidays and vacations. I think this is awesome, however some parents think it unecessary. I think that we should praise our teachers for what they put up with at school from the students and reward those who's students show progress. Penalize the parents of unruly children... that should get results. I realize that there is a stigma or reputation that follows the Hispanic race, I believe that in all instances and races progress begins at home.
Just my thoughts. I have never posted or been outspoken about this but Maybe its time.
I’m Anglo. Snyder is now over half Hispanic. To go forward the two communities are going to have to get together. We are all west texans and want the same things. I think the Anglos know this but we need to have some Hispanic leaders step forward and join some boards and some community groups so that they can be heard.
I agree. Education is so important in today’s world and it starts with the value parents place on it.
What about LULAC? That group seems very in your face, but if there is real discrimination going on, I think it needs to be stopped. I just think the best approach is to try to work things out.
well said...I think maybe LULAC started out with good intentions but have been led astray, same as other races beleiving that they are owed something.
LULAC is very "angry" and one sided. I have had hispanic bosses who would advance hispanic workers not best suited for that position, Discriminating against anglo's, Sad situation for any business or group
I however like to keep to myself and associate myself with minds that stimulate and motivate. Definately, courtesy to others is the best policy. I once was told: Treat people the way they want to be treated not the way you think they want to be treated. That is RESPECT.
Do you think, that getting more races involved in comm boards and groups is what People want? Some races are ostracized just for being around. Some may not want to hear what others races have to say. I do believe a group of Hispanic leaders need to step up and help educate and motivate the younger generations to do better for themselves and to be a positive statistic not a negative one.

Anglo's do not need a name like , LEAUGE OF UNITED WHITE AMERICAN CITIZENS to anger Hispanics.
I agree. The best way to affect change is to get on a board or join a community group. I think Anglos would welcome thoughtful Hispanic input.
This should be tried first before bringing in groups that only divide the community, whether these groups represent Anglos or Hispanics.

Any organizational name that includes only one race is automatically seen to exclude all others. While the name may not 'anger' others, it implies "our agenda is different from your agenda".
A previous post referred to the composition of community boards and committees. Where are the Hispanic candidates at election time? Is the Hispanic community represented on the ballots in proportion with the local demographics?
